Looking for a sports medicine podiatrist in Louisville, KY or Floyds Knobs, IN? At Preuss Podiatry, both of our board-certified foot and ankle surgeons are athletes themselves, and we treat sports injuries of the foot and ankle for patients of all ages and abilities, from weekend walkers to high school, college and competitive athletes.

Very commonly, foot and ankle problems are sports-related injuries. Sudden increase in activity, overuse, or inadequate stretching prior to exercise can contribute to the condition. Our goal is to find the cause of your pain, treat it, and help you return to your sport safely, without the injury coming back.

Doctors who understand athletes

Dr. H. Fred Preuss, Jr. is an avid runner. He has completed over 30 mini marathons and one full marathon. Being a runner himself, Dr. Preuss understands how to appropriately modify your training due to injuries or recovery. Once you are healed, Dr. Preuss has proven recommendations on how to avoid further injuries.

Dr. Anne Carole Preuss was a four year collegiate athlete playing lacrosse at Centre College. As an athlete herself, she understands that injuries are often par for the course. She recognizes the demands of high level athletes and knows the pressure of returning to their sport. She will work hard to get you confidently back on your feet.

Sports injuries we treat

Our sports medicine podiatrists treat the full range of foot and ankle sports injuries, including:

  • Achilles tendonitis and Achilles tendon ruptures
  • Ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability
  • Ankle fractures and foot fractures
  • Stress fractures of the foot and ankle
  • Heel pain and plantar fasciitis
  • Ankle impingement and cartilage injuries treated with ankle arthroscopy

Achilles tendonitis and Achilles tendon rupture

Achilles tendonitis is a pain or ache at the back of the leg just above the heel bone, and a rupture is a partial or complete tear of the tendon. Learn more about Achilles tendonitis and Achilles tendon surgery.

Stress fractures of the foot and ankle

A stress fracture in the foot and ankle is a tiny, painful hairline crack in the bone. Stress fractures are very common in athletes that perform a lot of jumping, workers who are required to carry heavy items, or in older women due to low bone density. Stress fractures tend to present as areas of soreness that worsen during activity, and the foot or ankle may become swollen.

By obtaining x-rays or ordering advanced imaging, the podiatrists will be able to identify the stress fracture and begin treatment. Rest, immobilization, and offloading are key factors in a full recovery from a stress fracture.

When to see a sports medicine podiatrist

Don't play through foot or ankle pain. Call us if you have:

  • Pain that gets worse with activity or lasts more than a few days
  • Swelling or bruising after a twist, fall or hard landing
  • Trouble putting weight on your foot
  • A pop or snap at the back of the ankle
  • An ankle that keeps rolling or feels unstable

What to expect at your visit

Your doctor will ask how the injury happened, examine your foot and ankle, and take x-rays when needed. Some injuries need advanced imaging such as an MRI. You will leave with a clear diagnosis and a treatment plan, which may include bracing, a walking boot, physical therapy, custom orthotics or, when needed, surgery.

If you are training for an event or in season, tell us. We will work with you on a plan to stay active safely while you heal.
