What is Achilles tendonitis?

Achilles tendonitis is a pain or ache that occurs at the back of the leg just above the heel bone. The pain is caused by inflammation of the Achilles tendon. Very commonly, it is a sports-related injury.

It often starts after a sudden increase in running or training, a change in shoes, or tight calf muscles. Pain and stiffness are usually worse in the morning or at the start of activity.

Signs of an Achilles injury

  • Pain or stiffness at the back of the heel or lower calf
  • Swelling or a tender lump along the tendon
  • Pain that gets worse with activity
  • A pop, or a feeling of being kicked in the back of the leg
  • Trouble pushing off or standing on your toes

Achilles tendonitis treatment

Treatment often starts with rest, activity changes, stretching, heel lifts or supportive shoes, and anti-inflammatories. A walking boot and physical therapy help many patients, and custom orthotics can take strain off the tendon. Running through the pain can turn tendonitis into a more serious injury, so have it checked early.

Achilles tendon rupture and surgery

In addition to treating Achilles tendonitis, the doctors also specialize in the treatment of Achilles tendon ruptures. Achilles tendon ruptures occur when there is a partial or complete tear of the Achilles tendon. A tendon rupture requires surgical intervention in order to repair and restore the integrity of the Achilles tendon. Following surgery, physical therapy is recommended in order to encourage a full recovery.

If you think you have torn your Achilles tendon, call us right away. Early treatment gives the best chance of a strong repair.

Recovery after Achilles tendon surgery

After surgery, you will be in a splint or boot and slowly put more weight on the leg as the tendon heals. Physical therapy rebuilds strength and motion. Your surgeon will give you a timeline for walking, driving, work and sports.
