What are plantar warts?

Plantar warts are benign painful skin growths that occur on the bottom of the feet. They tend to be rough in nature and are tender to touch. Plantar warts are caused by the human papillomavirus.

If you are someone who thinks you have a wart, it is important to see a doctor as soon as the signs begin. Warts can spread and multiply so early detection is key.

How to tell if it is a wart

  • A rough, grainy bump on the bottom of the foot
  • Tiny black dots in the middle
  • Pain when you squeeze it from the sides
  • Lines of the skin that go around it instead of through it

Warts can look like corns or calluses. Your podiatrist can tell the difference and treat the right problem.

Plantar wart treatment

Depending on the size, location and shape of the wart, the experienced podiatrists may recommend freezing, chemical peel, surgical excision or laser treatment for the removal of the warts.

Some warts need more than one visit. Treatment in the office is safer than cutting or burning a wart at home, especially if you have diabetes or poor circulation.

Preventing plantar warts

  • Wear sandals in public showers, pools and locker rooms.
  • Don’t share towels, socks or shoes.
  • Keep your feet clean and dry.
  • Don’t pick at warts, which can spread them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I remove a plantar wart myself?

Store-bought treatments can work for some warts, but deep or painful warts usually need professional care. Wart removal is safer in the office, especially if you have diabetes.

Yes. The virus spreads through damp floors and shared towels or shoes, and warts can multiply on your own foot.

They can. Some warts need more than one treatment, and good foot hygiene lowers the chance of new ones.
